I have the longest hair in my whole kindergarten class. I already know that today Ryan Redmond will come up to me at recess or lunch—or maybe even in the classroom when Mrs Lawrence isn’t looking—and he’ll yank on my pony-plait like it’s a chain or a cord and he’ll say, ‘Whoosh, flushing the toilet!’ Or ‘Click, turning on the light!’ Or ‘Toot toooooooooooot!’, like he’s a train driver.

When I walk through the school gate I can’t help it, I hold on to my hair and then slip it into my mouth, just for a little while, while nobody is looking.
